Gentle pumping action vital to pig breeders

Watson-Marlow peristaltic pumps have been installed by JSR Healthbred to dilute and dispense a solution of boar semen into plastic vials because of their gentle pumping action and high accuracy.

JSR Healthbred operates a pig artificial insemination centre at Thorp Willoughby in Yorkshire, supplying approximately 140,000 doses of boar semen each year to around 800 farmers throughout Britain. After quality control checks, the semen is diluted with a buffered glucose solution which keeps the sperm alive and stable. The spermatozoa is then pumped into plastic tubes for storage.

A Watson-Marlow 520Di/L peristaltic pump fitted with autoclavable silicone tubing first meters glucose diluent into a container where it is mixed with the semen, after which a second 520Di/L pump dispenses 75ml of diluted semen into plastic tubes, which are finally heat sealed.
